Enthronement on February 22, 1940 in Lhasa, Tibet
1954: went to Peking to hold discussions with Chinese Communist leaders. 1956: visited India for 2500 Buddha Jayanti celebrations; held political discussions with Pandit Nehru and Chou En-lai.
1959: left Tibet following the Lhasa Uprising. Made unsuccessful appeals to United Nations on behalf of Tibetan people.
1989: Winner of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Peace [noble.se]
