Michael Bowen Time-line

1937
Michael Bowen born in Beverly Hills California, first son of wealthy Hollywood dentist, Dr. Sterling Bowen Dr. Bowen was the son of Welch immigrants to America

1942
Michael traumatized by fake Japanese attack on la. Actually ufos {se literature firemans national training manual}

1944
Sterling and Grace married and divorced. By this simple act, Michaels life was now to enter a phase of misery similar to the tales of creation he sometimes heard from his Christian or Jewish playmates. Life for Michael before the divorce had been an idylic childs paradise. A life lived literally in beautiful gardens with friendly animals and lovely sounds of sweet dulcet voices cooing about his baby beauty The divorce descended like an executioners knife slicing away all joy and leaving only loneliness and despair. For some to him unknowable reason his small boy self was expelled from the world of happiness. He had been thrown out of his paradise, rejected and placed into military boarding school
This was the era just prior to the schizophrenic atom bomb fear that settled on America after world war two. The great victory of the so called free world over the forces of nazism, fascism, and Japanese Imperialism did not produce any feelings of freedom for young Michael. Many years latter Michael would journey with American guru Ram Dass to the Hopi Indian lands of Arizona to try and understand the meaning of these three symbols, the swastika, the cross and the rising sun. According to Hopi legends the understanding of these symbols were given by the Great Spirit to the Hopi people thru mystic trance performed in their underground Kivas.

  • Enters Military school in Santa Monica California.
    As a child Michael experianced the ice hard feeling in his hands as his fingers gripped the cold steel chain linked fence which ran around the perimeter of the military boarding school. This horrible place of restriction and brutality he was now made to call home. Military drill and paranoid lectures on Communism became his new fear filled reality. At the age of eight and nine it was possible for him to realize the lies he was being fed Rebellion now had became a necessary part of survival. In order for his spirit to survive he welded a powerful tool from the energy born of his captivity and fear. His new tool enabled him to recognize the body language and tone of voice of those whose job it was to drive the lies into his brain. For Michael, lifelong resistance to authority began there and then in hometown Beverly Hills. 1945 arrived, the atom bomb was dropped on the defenseless Japanese citys of Hiroshima and Nagasaki .This was a graphic lesson for Michael, to be defenceless was a guarantee for abuse.1946 and 1947 came and went, michael still leaned on the cold chain fence. But now he had new pictures with which to identify. The news papers were full of pictures of prisoners in Dachau. They too were hanging on fences like the one he gripped every morning and evening. But they were dead.These images traumatized the little boy more than anything he endured earlier. He believed he would die this way. He vowed he would escape from all forms of imprisonment. Schools, organizations, agreements, anything that could place him in a trap again. The horror of 1947s realization would shape his life. First drawing made on backs of military maps and books.

    1953
    Runs away from military school rejects family enters Chouinard art institute.

    1954
    In 1954 Michael became involved in the fermenting Los Angeles art and occult circles He was introduced by his Beverly Hills friend Bernie Cornfeld to occult teacher. Samson Du Briers. Du Briers salon of artists and mystics was Michaels first introduction to the underground world of international art and occult tradition. He began to read rare copys of the works of Alistair Crowley, these books introduced him to a deeper way of thinking.and exposed him to images that he had never before seen. The idea that ones situation in life could be determined by the exercise of ones Will gave Michael an enormous shock of psychic enlightenment and the power to begin making images derived from his new realizations..
    The mysterys surrounding the Egyptian pyramid origins the appearance of ufos over Washington D.C., and the terrible self destructive lifestyles of the rich and famous who had peopled Michaels reality coalesced in his mind, creating an intense need to express itself in art. Thus began his lifelong pursuit of metaphysics and art.
    He begins attending Chouinard art Institute .He creates his first studio in downtown L.A.with young artist John Reed .Later that year they both become part of the informal bohemian Laurel Canyon art scene centered around Vons Café Galleria. There he meets big burly bear club type Ed Keinholz .who was showing his works on the café walls. Keinholz was the ultimate survivor ,artist For sixteen year old totally un streetwise Bowen , Keinholz was the teacher he needed. Ten years older than Bowen Ed keinholz exuded a powerful self confidence. Ed took a humorous liking to Michael and within a few months Ed asked Michael to share the now famous first L.A.keinholz art studio.They rented a former ceramics studio from master sports car designer Dutch Darrin, creator of the 50s auto classic the Kaiser Darrin .Darrin had his design studio in the front half of the building.The rent was seven dollars a month..
