Aboard a Boeing 314 Clipper on January 11, 1943 Franklin D. Rossevelt made the first flight by a president in office. The flight from Miami, Florida to Bathurst, British Gambia was part of a trip to Casablanca to meet with Winston Churchill and plan the European invasion.


PAA flight deck - A master crew position, equivalent to a ship’s captain, was in overall command. His desk (without flying controls) was on the port side of the control cabin, third behind the (first) pilot and the navigator. With operating experience, this position was later eliminated. [more]

On July 21,1936 Pan American signed a contract for six aircraft, the first of which (designation Model 314) took to the air on June 7,1938. It outstripped all rivals in size, with twice the power of the Martin M-130. The 14-cylinder double-row Wright Cyclones were the first to use 100-octane fuel. The finest flying boat to go into regular commercial service, the Boeing 314 weighed 40 tons, and the first batch cost $550,000 per aircraft. [more]

Crashed and sank in River Tagus near Lisbon, Portugal on February 22, 1943

NC-18605 Dixie Clipper April 1939 Atlantic service. Inaugurated trans-Atlantic passenger service, 29-Jun-1939 (Port Washington, New York-Horta-Lisbon-Marseilles) Purchased by the U.S. Navy in 1942, but operated by Pan Am. Sold after the War to World Airways and scrapped in 1950. President Roosevelt was flown to the Casablanca Conference, to meet with Churchill and Stalin, on January 14, 1943, thus becoming the first in-office president to fly, and the 314 Dixie Clipper the first presidential airplane.

NC-18609 Pacific Clipper May 1941 Pacific service. Purchased by the U.S. Navy in 1946. After the War it was sold to Universal Airlines. It was damaged in a storm and subsequently salvaged for parts.
NC-18610   April 1941 Ordered by Pan Am. Sold to the British Purchasing Commission and used by BOAC; became G-AGCB Bangor After the War it was sold to World Airways - 1948.
NC-18611 Anzac Clipper June 1941 Pacific and Atlantic service. Sold to the U.S. Navy in 1942. Sold to American International Airways after the War in 1947 and then to World Airways in 1948; sold again in 1951 and destroyed in Baltimore, Maryland in late 1951.
NC-18612 Capetown Clipper August 1941 Atlantic service. Sold to the U.S. Navy in 1942. Sold to American International Airways in 1947. Was sunk at sea by the U.S. Coast Guard on October 14, 1947
