The defamation of anarchy and anarchists in the media The impetus for this site was a story in the New York Times, which equated neo-Nazis with anarchists as "hate groups". We first called this site the Anarchist Anti-Defamation League to counter to defamation of anarchy and anarchists in the media. Many journalists have little or no historical background about anarchy or anarchists. To help this situation, we created A Quick Guide to Anarchy for Journalists. The demonization of anarchy and anarchists continues ... feel free to add to the list here .
Anarchy and young people

Young people often experience first hand the abuse of power by those in positions of authority. Parents, cops and others are forever trying to enforce their will on the young - often in areas that counteract the very values exposed by adults such as freedom of speech and the right to be left alone when you are not hurting others. The good news is that if understood properly, this can provide an educational experience about legitimacy of authority. The downside is that if abuse is accepted as normal it can provide the baseline and conditioning for acceptance of new levels of authoritarian control. We encourage young people to question the legitimacy of all authority and to hopefully grow up and create a world where there is less abuse of authority. We hope this site helps.

Homework Helper provides a good introduction to anarchy. You may want to add to 'Fight the Power (or Fuck Off) - an introduction to anarchism aimed at teenagers. Our experience with the ADL. The Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith in New York hassled us about using the word "anti-defamation" in the original tile of this site. [full story and comments from visitors to this site]. See ADL File (or adl-watch elist) for more info on this organization. Note that they leave the Hacker Anti-Defamation League alone - thought they did go after the Witches Anti Discrimination League. They even have the nerve to call the anarchy "A" sign a "General Racist Symbol".

The native Americans, Jefferson wrote, "had not Submitted themselves to any laws, any coercive power and shadow of government. The only controls are their manners, and the moral sense of right and wrong. . . . "Anarchists and extremist socialist groups -- many of which, such as the Workers' World Party, Reclaim the Streets, and Carnival Against Capitalism -- have an international presence and, at times, also represent a potential threat in the United States. For example, anarchists, operating individually and in groups, caused much of the damage during the 1999 World Trade Organization ministerial meeting in Seattle." - louis j. freeh, may 10, 2001
