Fewer citations, more medical treatment at Burning Man: "Bureau of Land Management law officers issued 177 citations overall at the weeklong, counterculture event through Labor Day -- a 25 percent reduction from a year ago, BLM officials said.
The five arrests by BLM agents equaled the five last year despite the fact a record 30,586 people attended the festival, about a 5 percent increase from 2002. "

Wired News: Burning Man '03 Ashes, Dust: "'I am extremely saddened by this,' said festival founder Larry Harvey. 'When you assume a sense of personal responsibility for a community of people, you can't imagine how it will affect you when someone's harmed in a serious way. When that first (serious incident) occurred in 1996, it changed my life. But we are very zealous about protecting public welfare, and our incredibly strong safety and crime record reflects that."

They came, they saw, they gazed into the fire / Spiritual themes permeate Burning Man: "The annual weeklong event was attended by a record 30,500 people and ended Sunday night. Most people seemed to agree that only superlatives mattered -- biggest, wildest, most creative.
But there was a different tone from years past. The official theme of this year's Burning Man was 'Beyond Belief,' a somewhat vague notion of spirituality that invited the festival's participants to explore the bounds of religion beyond specific dogmas or creeds. "

Woman Dies in Accident at Burning Man - AP ... BLACK ROCK DESERT, Nev. - A woman riding an "art car" at the counterculture Burning Man festival died when she accidentally fell under the vehicle's wheels, authorities said... Katharine Lampman, 21, of Belmont, Calif., was killed about 3 a.m. when she tried to get off the "art car," which is similar to a parade float, said Jamie Thompson, a spokesman for the Bureau of Land Management.

Ashes to ashes, Burning Man city returns to dust - BLACK ROCK DESERT, Nev. (AP) - As the ashes cooled Sunday where the wooden Burning Man toppled in a flaming finale, residents of the West's strangest city began returning their community to the desert dust from which it sprang just a week ago. A record 30,500 people turned some of the nation's remotest real estate into a hedonistic utopia where everything is recycled and where drugs, clothes and inhibitions are optional. Pilgrims from most states and a Babel of other nations journeyed here for what they insist is far more than weeklong party. It is, they said time and again, a Life Changing Experience. The creation and utter destruction of what for a time becomes Nevada's seventh largest city is part of the annual ritual that evolved from a spontaneous San Francisco beach celebration of the 1986 summer solstice. The one ignited late Saturday towered eight stories: a 40-foot stylized wooden man highlighted in blue neon
